LSU Baseball is finally back in the win column after a 7-4 defeat over McNeese State.
Blake Money was the announced starting pitcher for this game. Hayden Travinski wasn’t at his usual catcher position, Travinski was placed in the lineup as a first baseman. He was given the spot over Jared Jones and Cade Beloso.
Although the Tigers rallied through to win the game, it was an error-filled ballgame and the Purple and Gold did not look like their usual selves.
Travinski committed an error at the top of the frame during the first inning. The Cowboys scored nothing during the first.
LSU took a 1-0 lead after third baseman Tommy White had an RBI double and Dylan Crews reached on a fielding error.
In the second inning Travinski scored after stealing home on a wild pitch, bringing the score up to 2-0.
Brayden Jobert then scored after Alex Milazzo's groundout, this would make the score 3-0.
At the top of the third, Blake Money gave up five-straight singles, which allowed two McNeese players to reach home plate. This sparked some bullpen action as Griffin Herring started to warm-up.
Herring was placed on the mound as Money’s relief pitcher, Herring usually isn’t a relief pitcher during midweek matchups.
The last time Herring pitched in a midweek game was March 21 versus Central Arkansas – almost two months ago.
After the top of the fourth, the score would be 3-3. Mid-sixth inning McNeese would plate one to capture the lead 4-3.
As soon as fans started to lose hope in the Purple and Gold, Cade Beloso blasted a homerun to right field. This allowed the Tigers to regain the lead.
This is Beloso’s 10th home run of the season.
Coming in clutch like usual, Travinski makes back-to-back homers as he blasted one out and over the fence in centerfield. This brings the score to 5-4 with the Tigers back in the driver's seat.
End of the eighth inning Milazzo and Morgan plated two more runs for the Bayou Bengals, increasing their lead to 7-4.
This would be the final score.
After this victory, head coach Jay Johnson is now the ninth HC in the Power 5 with 40 wins in his first two seasons.
The Purple and Gold return to action Thursday night for the final SEC series of the season when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Georgia.
